Plumbers are in high demand but there are not enough young people entering the field to offset older plumbers looking to retire the next ten years.
The worker shortage, highlighted by the Associated General Contractors of America’s survey of members, see a demand for craft workers such as roofers, electricians, and plumbers but find it increasingly difficult to hire qualified workers. The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that plumbers will grow nationwide by 16% between 2016 and 2026.
Skilled trade occupations don’t require expensive education like a Bachelor’s degree from a university. Most plumbers learn their craft through trade school or apprenticeships. The median pay for “plumbers, pipefitters, and steamfitters” is $52,590 according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
You can start a plumbing apprenticeship with a competitive living wage and expect pay raises the more you work and grow in your skills.
