Course Description

This course is approved for four hours of content to professional plumbers and tradesmen on water heaters, a topic central to the plumbing trades. The course includes an overview of the general components and operation of residential water heaters—gas and electric—and is followed by a brief examination of relevant codes and resource identification, discussion of common safety and maintenance concerns, and sections dedicated to energy conservation, renewable energy, and commercial applications for new energy saving technology. It identifies and provides resources to further examine changes to residential energy standards by the federal government that will require full migration of water heaters to heat pump technology by 2029.  

This course covers the following topics:  

  • Common terms relevant to working on water heaters, gas and electric  
  • Common types of water heaters in U.S. markets 
  • Components of gas and electric water heaters and their functions 
  • General operating procedures for common types of water heaters 
  • Common guidelines and regulations, including sources for continued learning and common Code resources for plumbers 
  • Maintenance and Safety for residential water heaters 
  • Common sizing methods for water heater installation 
  • Renewable energy and energy conservation practices and technologies 
  • Hydronic systems  
  • Commercial systems and energy conservation technology  

There is no final exam for this course; however, each section is concluded with a brief review question and an opportunity to re-examine the content covered. This is followed by a section quiz. Each section quiz varies in length based upon the content and complexity of the associated content.
