Getting Licensed

Who needs to be licensed for plumbing in Florida?

A “plumbing contractor” means a contractor whose contracting business consists of the execution of contracts requiring the experience, financial means, knowledge, and skill to install, maintain, repair, alter, extend, or, when not prohibited by law, design plumbing. A plumbing contractor may install, maintain, repair, alter, extend, or design the following without obtaining any additional local regulatory license, certificate, or registration:

• sanitary drainage or storm drainage facilities;
• venting systems; public or private water supply systems;
• septic tanks; drainage and supply wells;
• swimming pool piping;
• irrigation systems; or
• solar heating water systems and all appurtenances, apparatus, or equipment used in connection with these, including boilers and pressure process piping and including the installation of water, natural gas, and storm and sanitary sewer lines; and water and sewer plants and substations;
• the design and installation, maintenance, repair, alteration, or extension of air-piping, vacuum line piping, oxygen line piping, nitrous oxide piping, and all related medical gas systems;
• fire line standpipes and fire sprinklers to the extent authorized by law; ink and chemical lines;
• fuel oil and gasoline piping and tank and pump installation, except bulk storage plants; and
• pneumatic control piping systems.

Certified contractors can contract in any jurisdiction within the state, registered contractors may only contract within the jurisdictions where they are registered.

What are the fees associated with plumbing contractor licensing in Florida?

• Certified Contractor’s Exam: $135
• Initial Licensure for Certified Contractor: $249*
• Initial Licensure for Registered Contractor: $309*
• Active Renewal (Certified or Registered Individual): $209
• Active Renewal (Certified or Registered Business): $259

Renewing a License

When do I need to renew my Florida plumbing license?

• Certified Contractors: August 31 every even-numbered year
• Registered Contractors: August 31 every odd-numbered year

How do I renew my plumbing license in Florida?

To renew your license, you will need to create an account with the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation website and complete the renewal process.

Do I need continuing education to renew my plumbing license in Florida?

Yes, both certified and registered contractors are required to complete continuing education

14 hours every two years including:

• 1 hour of each of the following:
  • Specialized or Advanced Module
  • Workplace Safety
  • Business Practices
  • Workers’ Compensation
  • Laws & Rules
• 9 hours of any other board approved construction related instruction
